Babu Genu , born on January 1, 1908, in Mahalunge Padawal, Pune district, was a dedicated freedom fighter who made the ultimate sacrifice in the struggle against British rule. Working as a mill laborer in Mumbai, he became actively involved in the Swadeshi movement, which advocated for the boycott of foreign goods to promote Indian self-reliance.
On December 12, 1930, a significant event unfolded that highlighted Babu Genu’s commitment to the cause. A British cloth merchant, George Frazier of Manchester, was transporting a consignment of foreign-made cloth from his shop in Old Hanuman Galli to Mumbai Port. Anticipating resistance from Indian protesters, Frazier had secured police protection. As the truck carrying the cloth moved along Kalbadevi Road, near Bhangwadi, Babu Genu stood resolutely in its path, chanting slogans in praise of Mahatma Gandhi and urging the boycott of foreign goods.
The police officer accompanying the truck ordered the driver, who was Indian, to proceed over Babu Genu. The driver refused, expressing his unwillingness to harm a fellow Indian. In response, the British officer took control of the vehicle and drove it over Babu Genu, resulting in his tragic death. This act of brutality ignited widespread outrage, leading to strikes and protests throughout Mumbai.
Babu Genu’s martyrdom became a symbol of resistance against colonial oppression and underscored the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the fight for India’s independence. Today, his legacy is commemorated through various landmarks:
- Babu Genu Ground in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- Babu Genu Wadi in Mahalunge Padwal, Pune District, Maharashtra.
- Babu Genu Chowk in Pune, Maharashtra.
- Amar Shahid Babu Genu Marg in South Delhi, Delhi.
- A corner across KEM Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, features his bust, honoring him as Hutatma Babu Genu.
